The Importance of Redundancy

SMS Datacenter maintains a 99.982 percent uptime standard required of Tier 3 data centers. To guarantee this uptime, we designed our data center systems to be redundant.

Redundant systems are backup systems that take over in case of a shutdown. We have two sets of power, cooling, and network systems, each running on separate circuits.

Why is data center redundancy important to businesses?

  • It allows a business to operate during and after a disaster. Businesses should prepare for worst-case scenarios, including natural disasters, hardware failures, cyberattacks, and human error.
  • It protects equipment from damage caused by power and temperature fluctuations.
  • It ensures the constant availability of applications and data.
  • It prevents data loss in transit and at rest.
  • It helps maintain an optimal customer experience
  • It ensures the business can take advantage of growth opportunities

SMS Datacenter created redundancy with these four systems:

  • UPS: Stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. This unit provides short-term battery power until the main power source is restored or we switch to our backup generator. This unit also safeguards equipment against power fluctuations.
  • Generator: If the primary power source does not return quickly, we will use our diesel-fueled generators. These units hold up to four megawatts of power. In turn, they provide more than 72 hours of run time when operating at full load.
  • Cooling: We operate redundant computer room air-conditioning (CRAC) units and chillers to protect servers from overheating. The chilled water cools the air in the data center. Also, the CRACs move hot air into the unit and push cold air into the raised floor.
  • Network: Instead of relying on a single provider for internet service, we use a mix of upstream providers. We connected the different internet services to our data center via two separate fiber entrances and paths. If one provider goes down, we can reroute traffic to another.
